Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses both psychotherapy and hypnotherapy to help bring about real and effective change. It helps the client to concentrate on their preferred future and make small steps forwards. It is a collaborative process whereby the client must want to make these changes and take back control of their own lives.

Solution Focused Psychotherapy

The type of psychotherapy that I practice uses techniques from Solution Focused Brief Therapy. It helps the client to reduce anxiety and stress by concentrating on the solutions and take the next small steps forwards, rather than dwelling on the problems of the past. This is achieved by acknowledging where the client is currently, identifying where they want to be and helping them to make the necessary changes.

It avoids ‘problem talk’ and therefore doesn’t involve revisiting old and painful memories. Although both the therapist and client can acknowledge any painful events that may have happened, the process is more about helping the client to get from where they are, to where they want to be.

Hypnosis:

The hypnotic state is a very natural state of being and we all experience it daily. For example driving back from work and not remembering the journey home, or becoming so engrossed in a book and not being aware of how much time has passed. Put simply hypnosis is a state of focused attention, and once in this relaxed state, the mind is more responsive to suggestion. In the therapeutic setting, we use positive suggestion to help the client change unhelpful thinking patterns. The feeling of hypnosis is very much what we experience when we daydream. During this relaxed state, the client can often hear everything that is being said to them and it can even be thought of as guided daydreaming.

Despite the image that films, books and the media like to portray about hypnosis- in no way does it involve the therapist taking control of the client’s mind. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will or be made to do anything they do no want to do.

What to Expect

The first session is the initial consultation, which is designed to assess what you want to achieve, how many sessions are likely needed and a chance to explain how the therapy can help.

In the first half of the subsequent sessions we will discuss any progress that has been made and I will encourage you to express yourself positively. We will focus on the solutions and I can help you to find the next steps forward, by steering you towards your preferred future.

I will then guide you into a relaxed state of hypnosis so we can reinforce all that we have discussed.
